about

Originally a Saxon village, by the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, Arundel had become a thriving market town & a busy port due to its location on the river Arun, 5 miles inland from the English channel.

Large trading ships from around the British Isles sailed to and from the town along the river. This led to a thriving shipbuilding industry by the 1800’s with wharves & shipyards on both sides of the river.

Virtually all evidence of this industrious past has now disappeared.
